THE SHORT ANSWER

A useful HSK 3 plan alternates new vocabulary with retrieval, instead of adding new words every day.

Study five days each week: three days for small contextual vocabulary units, one day for writing and similar-character repair, and one day for cumulative SRS review. Use the remaining days for light reading or rest.

Before week 1: choose the right starting point

Browse the HSK 3 vocabulary reference and sample several pages. If Level 1 and Level 2 words are not yet reliable in sound, meaning, and use, begin with the earliest weak level instead of forcing an HSK 3 label.

Set a modest daily target. Ten to fifteen useful words studied with context and retrieval usually beats a large list that is only reread.

Weeks 1–4: build reliable everyday vocabulary

Use short units about people, time, food, study, work, places, and daily routines. Hear every target word, notice the characters that recur, and write only the forms you cannot reconstruct.

At the end of each week, review without the source list. Words you miss should return sooner; words you retrieve correctly can move to a longer SRS interval.

Weeks 5–8: connect words across sentences

Add short sentences and your own Chinese text. Save unfamiliar HSK words with the sentence where you met them, then review the word in that same context.

Reserve one session each week for look-alike Hanzi or stroke-order problems. Repair the exact source of the error rather than copying every character repeatedly.

Weeks 9–12: retrieve under mixed conditions

Mix meaning recall, listening choices, similar-character comparison, short writing, and sentence use. A word is not stable merely because it looks familiar in a list.

Use the final week to revisit weak vocabulary and confirm it after a delay. Keep the published word list as a coverage reference, while Today decides what is actually due.

A repeatable weekly schedule

Monday, Wednesday, and Friday: one short HSK unit plus due reviews. Tuesday: listen and read a short text. Thursday: writing and similar-character repair. Saturday: cumulative SRS review. Sunday: rest or light exposure.

If reviews grow too large, stop adding words for a day. The goal is durable retrieval, not finishing a list on paper.

FAQ

How many HSK 3 words should I study per day?

Start with 10–15 useful words and reduce the number when due reviews become difficult to finish.

Can I finish HSK 3 in 12 weeks?

The schedule is a structure, not a guarantee. Your starting vocabulary, study time, listening experience, and retention determine the pace.

Should I use an HSK 3 PDF as my main course?

Use a list or PDF to check coverage. Use contextual study, listening, writing where needed, and SRS retrieval to make the words usable.
